Beach and Sand Games That Need Almost No Kit

A bucket and spade will only entertain for so long. Here are beach games for every age that need almost nothing else.

The beach is one of the few places kids of every age genuinely enjoy for hours without much prompting, but even the best sandcastle eventually needs a second act.

Younger kids (ages 3–6)

Sand excavation: Bury a few small toys, hand over a spoon, let them dig for "treasure."
Wave dodging. Simple, silly, and endlessly repeatable: run from the incoming wave without getting wet.
Sandcastle competition: Not for the best castle, but the silliest one, like a "castle for a crab" or "a hotel for a fish."
Shell sorting: Collect shells and sort them by colour, size or shape.

Ages 7–9

Sand sculpture challenge: Give a theme ("build an animal," "build a monster") and a time limit.
Beach volleyball, simplified: A line drawn in the sand as the "net," a beach ball, forgiving rules.
Buried treasure map: One person buries an item and draws a simple treasure map with landmarks for the other to follow.
Longest sandcastle wall: A team challenge to build the longest continuous wall before the tide comes in.

Ages 10–17

Beach flags: Everyone lies face-down, a set of "flags" (shells, towels) placed a short sprint away; last to grab one is out.
Frisbee golf: Set up a simple course using landmarks (a rock, a towel, a striped umbrella) as "holes."
Sand sculpture with judging: A proper competition with rules and a panel of judges (parents work fine).
Beach photography scavenger hunt. A list of shots to capture: something symmetrical, a wave mid-crash, a shadow.
