20 One-Minute Games for Waiting Rooms and Queues
No space, no equipment, and only a few minutes to fill. Twenty tiny games that work anywhere you're stuck waiting with a bored kid.
Waiting rooms, queues and slow-moving lines share the same constraints: no space to move, nothing to play with, and a child who's already restless. These games need absolutely nothing but a minute or two.
Ages 3–6
- Guess the sound: Whisper a sound (animal, vehicle, weather) and have them guess.
- Finger family. Wiggle each finger in turn, naming a family member for each.
- Colour spotting: Name a colour and see how many things they can spot wearing it.
- Silent statue. See how long they can freeze completely still. Genuinely tricky at this age.
Ages 7–9
- Alphabet around the room. Find something starting with each letter of the alphabet, in order, using only what's visible.
- Guess my number: Think of a number between 1 and 50; they guess, you say higher or lower.
- Categories, whispered. Pick a category and take turns naming an item, quietly enough not to disturb others.
- Would you rather: a quick, quiet round or two, no props needed.
Ages 10–13
- 20 questions: a reliable favourite that scales in difficulty however you like.
- Mental maths battle. Take turns giving each other quick sums to solve, increasing difficulty each round.
- Story building, one word at a time. Silent enough for a waiting room, surprisingly funny.
- Spot the difference, live: study a poster or sign for ten seconds, look away, and try to recall details.
Ages 14–17
- Just a Minute, whispered edition. Speak (quietly) on a random topic without hesitating or repeating.
- Two truths and a lie: share three facts, one false, and have others guess which.
- Silent charades. Act out a word or phrase using only gestures, no sound at all.
- Mental trivia relay: take turns asking general knowledge questions in a chosen category.
Beyond the waiting room
These twenty will get you through most queues, but for the longer waits, TinyThinkLabs can generate a fresh, quiet game matched to your child's age in seconds.
