Pool and Sprinkler Games for Every Age

Whether it's a paddling pool, a garden sprinkler or the real thing, here are games that make the most of any bit of water on a hot day.

Water changes the physics of play. Everything is slower, splashier and, for some reason, funnier. These games work in anything from a small paddling pool to a proper swimming pool.

Ages 3–6: Paddling pool play

Pouring station: a few cups and containers of different sizes, endlessly filled and emptied.
Floating race. Blow a floating toy or leaf across the pool by blowing only, no hands.
Sprinkler limbo: set a sprinkler to a gentle arc and see who can pass under it without getting the top of their head wet.
Ice cube hunt. Drop a handful of ice cubes into the pool and race to collect them all before they melt.

Ages 7–9

Marco Polo. The classic: one player closed-eyed calls "Marco," everyone else answers "Polo," and tags whoever they can find by sound alone.
Sinking treasure dive: toss a few safe, sinking objects into the shallow end and race to collect them.
Pool noodle jousting. Two players on a stable surface (or standing in shallow water) try to knock each other off balance using pool noodles.
Underwater tea party: a simple challenge to hold a "conversation" using only exaggerated gestures underwater.

Ages 10–17

Handstand and trick contest. A judged (informally) competition for the best underwater handstand or trick.
Pool volleyball: a beach ball and an imaginary net line make a fast, forgiving game.
Chicken fights (with appropriate supervision and safe depth). A classic pool party game for confident swimmers.
Relay races. Simple lap relays, or "silly" relays holding a cup of water without spilling it.

Safety notes worth repeating

Never leave young children unsupervised near any water, however shallow it looks.
Match games to actual swimming ability, not just age.
Sun protection matters as much as the game does. Reapply regularly during long pool sessions.
