Rainy Day Science Experiments Using Kitchen Cupboard Stuff
No lab coat, no science kit. Just baking soda, vinegar and a few things you already own, ten kitchen experiments that turn a wet afternoon into a discovery.
Some of the best science experiments use exactly what's already in the kitchen cupboard. No kit to order, no batteries to find, just a genuine sense of "wait, how did that happen?"
The reliable classics
Volcano eruption. Baking soda and vinegar in a cup, ideally inside a homemade "mountain" of modelling clay or foil. Add food colouring for extra drama.
Walking rainbow. Six glasses in a row, alternating full of coloured water and empty, connected by folded paper towels. Watch the colour "walk" between them overnight.
Dancing raisins. Drop raisins into a glass of clear soda and the bubbles carry them up and down like tiny divers.
Milk fireworks. A splash of milk in a shallow dish, a few drops of food colouring, then a drop of washing-up liquid in the centre. The colours explode outward.
A bit more advanced
Invisible ink. Lemon juice written on paper, invisible until held near a warm lamp.
Egg in vinegar. Soak an egg in vinegar for a day and the shell dissolves, leaving a bouncy, translucent egg (handle gently over a tray).
Homemade lava lamp. Oil, water, food colouring and an effervescent tablet in a clear bottle.
Static electricity butterflies. Rub a balloon on your hair, hold it near tissue paper cut-outs, and watch them "fly" without being touched.
Turning it into real learning
- Predict first. Before each experiment, ask "what do you think will happen?" The prediction matters more than the result.
- Ask why, gently. You don't need the full chemistry. "The bubbles are a gas being made really fast" is often enough.
- Keep a simple lab notebook. A page per experiment with a drawing and one sentence builds the habit of recording observations.
More for the next rainy day
Ten experiments will get you through the wettest week, but eventually you'll want something completely different. TinyThinkLabs generates a fresh, age-matched game or activity idea in seconds, indoors, no mess required.
